During my student teaching at Eyer Middle School, I created lesson plans and materials for the Creative Writing Unit. During this unit of study, students were instructed to write a three-to-five-page short story in the science fiction or fantasy genre. Students were given creative freedom in their storytelling, so long as they followed the guidelines set by the core curriculum. Lessons were preplanned to follow the writing process in that students would draft ideas, write out a cohesive first draft, revise their work, and submit a final product. For students with gifted enrichment IEPs, there were additional lessons and guidelines around the inclusion of allegory. This lesson unit was carried out over six weeks.
This PowerPoint was created as a guide for my 8th-grade ELA students as they transitioned into the Creative Writing Unit. This guide contained notes for students to use while they drafted and revised their short stories. The presentation also includes videos and writing examples for students to use and refer to as they continually worked on their final project.
